Data for the Common Good (D4CG) is a research program operated by the University of Chicago. This “Privacy Notice” will explain how our organization collects, uses, stores, and protects the personal data we collect from you when you visit our websites. This Privacy Notice applies to our website, https://commons.cri.uchicago.edu/, and any other websites or platforms that we control. This Privacy Notice does not apply to other University offices and functions that have separate privacy policies or privacy notices. If you would like to know more about how another University office or function uses personal information, please contact that office or function directly.

- IP address (a unique identifier assigned to every networked computer)

- Pages in the PCDC website and data portal that you visited

- Professional and biographical information

How do we collect your data?
You directly provide the D4CG with most of the data we collect. We collect data and process data when you:
- Create a User ID for the PCDC Data Portal or GEARBOx
- Log on and use the PCDC Data Portal or GEARBOx
- E-mail a support request
- Interact with the D4CG website, platforms, online applications, and internet‐connected services
- Register for or attend a D4CG event
D4CG may also receive your data indirectly from:
- Publicly-available sources
- Your colleagues may provide your personal information to us
How will we use your data?
We may share or disclose your personal information as follows:
- Operation of the PCDC and D4CG Services: D4CG may use your personal information to operate D4CG services and platforms, correspond with you regarding your use of the D4CG platforms, and send you information about D4CG activities in which you are involved or have expressed interest.
- Service Providers: D4CG uses third parties to support our operations. In such cases, we may share your information with such parties.
- Required by Law: D4CG may share your information with third parties to the extent we are required to do so by law, court order, or subpoena.
- De-Identified and Aggregate Information: D4CG may use and disclose information about our users in de-identified or aggregate form without limitation.
How do we store your data?
D4CG and its platforms are located in the United States or the European Union. Any personal information the D4CG collects or retains about you will be stored and used in the United States or the European Union. D4CG safeguards users’ personal information according to existing policies with respect to privacy and data safeguarding standards. D4CG will retain data collected from users until the purpose of which such data was collected is no longer applicable.
Information and updates
D4CG would like to send you updates about D4CG activities and data in which you have expressed interest or that we think you might like. These updates include quarterly newsletters and annual reports. You may opt out of these updates and e-mails from D4CG by sending an e-mail to pcdc_privacy@lists.uchicago.edu.
What are your data protection rights?
D4CG would like to make sure you are fully aware of all of your data protection rights.
Every user is entitled to the following:
- The right to access - You have the right to request D4CG provide copies of your personal data. We may charge you a small fee for this service.
- The right to rectification - You have the right to request that D4CG correct any information you believe is inaccurate. You also have the right to request that D4CG complete information you believe is incomplete.
- The right to erasure - You have the right to request that D4CG erase your personal data, under certain conditions.
- The right to restrict processing - You have the right to request that D4CG restrict the processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.
- The right to object to processing - You have the right to object to D4CG’s processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.
- The right to data portability - You have the right to request that D4CG transfer the data that we have collected to another organization, or directly to you, under certain conditions.
- If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you. D4CG will make a good-faith effort to honor all requests. Under certain circumstances, D4CG may be required to retain personal data due to contractual or legal obligations.
